Our Mission

world class orthopaedic patient care, education, research

Word from the Chairman

The decision of the Faculty of Medicine to entrust me with the task of establishing a new department in 1998 was accepted as an honor, a privilege and at the same time as a great challenge and an opportunity to lay the foundations and gradually shape it up following patterns of proven success and excellence. Pulling the strings of a newly born academic unit inside a new University gave us the opportunity, the freedom and the enthusiasm to undertake this endeavour with an even greater share of responsibility on our backs. We attracted a team of new scientists, those with a sound scientific background, who show true love and dedication to the patients, are hard-workers and distinguished for their devotion and strong will for the production and dissemination of knowledge to the younger colleagues. On the first steps, the essential elements needed to build a truly cohesive team were decided upon. First, the mutual trust among all the medical staff members, coupled with the commitment to decisions and plans of action. Holding one another accountable for acting towards realization of those plans and focusing on the achievement of collective results were also agreed upon from the very beginning.

Malizos, Konstantinos

Professor and Chairman

The engagement in an unfiltered debate and creative interaction around ideas is something we have also been adhered to from the first steps and it has been observed closely ever since.

Our first and basic obligation as academic physicians is tutoring our students the way they can reach the up-to-date knowledge in our field of expertise, starting with the basics for understanding the function of the pathological and the traumatic conditions of the musculoskeletal system. In parallel, practising as treating physicians and surgeons we pursue our task of providing best medical care to patients; a service which, as all expect from an academic medical unit, has to be exemplary and at the same time serves as a role model to our students for developing professional skills.

Among the educational commitments of the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Thessalia is the task of organizing and supporting an intensive training programme for the students, the residents and the PhD candidates, and also the continuous evaluation of the results of the clinical work. Clinical and laboratory research-driven development of new knowledge is the third component of our academic commitments. The translation of the most valid research findings and the updates from continuous medical research and educational programmes into the daily clinical practice is for the benefit of our patients.

Servicing a tertiary care facility we have met the need to confront not only the common clinical routine, but also a large variety of complicated surgical emergencies and musculoskeletal trauma cases, demanding posttraumatic, postoperative and congenital deformities and dysfunctions. A team approach with the collaborative efforts of the medical and the nursing personnel guarantees the most effective diagnostic procedures and treatment options, always within the context of the resources available by the National Health System.

In such an academic hospital environment the students, and most importantly, the residents are given the appropriate exposure and acquire the experience to confront difficult situations.

A decade has already been completed since November 1998 and we thought it is the right time to review the outcomes and exhibit the results of all those efforts made by all our group members who give their best to meet the initial goals. This might allow our peers to judge whether they were reliably approached and whether the fruits of those goals are available to benefit our students and our patients.
