The Institute of Biomedical Research and Technology (IBRT) acts within the framework of translational research and in cooperation with Greek Universities, Hospitals, and other participants. More specifically, the Institute aims to cover the area between medical applications and the rapidly developing Basic Biomedical Research. Its research activities focus especially on the areas of diagnostic high output applications based on the developments of Genomics and Proteomics, the development of therapeutic applications, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Biology of Reproduction, Biomedical Imaging and Radiation, Biomechanics, Histomechanics, and Biomechanic sensors of clinical physical output and rehabilitation. The Institute has adopted an interdisciplinary approach.

The Institutes are spread in the region of Thessalia collaborating among them and are all staffed with internationally achnowledged scientific personnel. The clinical resources of BIOMED include 5 big hospitals and a number of private clinics, which sets the bases to support research protocols. The most important hospital is the University Hospital of Larissa.
The BIOMED Institute (IBRT) consists of 9 research groups supported by the faculty of the School of Health Sciences of the University of Thessalia.
